The Jembrana Regency

Publish date : Tuesday, 22 September 2009 20:01:34

A traditional music called Jegog is a combination of the lovely tune of Bamboo Gamelan combined with deep resonating sounds in high sophisticated rhythmic patterns. The Bamboo instrument have become special characteristic of Jembrana Regency which is located in the west side of Bali island. While traditional music of Jembrana promotes a very different nuance, which gives a strong impression to its audience.

The Jembrana regency with Negara as its capital city occupies an area of 841.8 km2, of which a large part is forest area. The forest area of Jembrana promoting wonderful tropical wildlife is know as Bali’s green carpet in the west and protected by law as west Bali National Park.

Neighboring with East Java, the wildlife and forestry in west Bali are similar to those in Banyuwangi, East Java. The forest of teak trees and palm trees in East Java see to be extended to western part of Bali before one finally embrace the true Balinese natural life at the borders between the regency of Jembrana and Tabanan.

A major part the population in Jembrana, which is approximately 220.000, consist of migrants from the island of Java, and they brought with them Javanese culture to the island, some of them are Islamic followers. Comparing to other regions in Bali, its very possible that the close distance between Jembrana and East Java separated only by the Bali Strait has caused sort of acculturation. Although there are strong influence from Javanese culture, Jembrana also saves important part in the course of history of the Hindu development in Bali. The series of temples on the south beaches of Jembrana, like Pura Prancak, Pura Rambut Siwi, and some other show us that Jembrana played an important part when the Hindu religion reached Bali from Java at the beginnings of history in Bali.
